Top 30 Tunes of 2009: Listen Here

2009 was a year where the norm was turned upside down. We saw a regime change in Washington, D.C. Michael Jackson’s death almost crashed the internet. And people lost their marbles over the flu.

Music was no exception. We saw the formation of supergroups like Monsters of Folk, Them Crooked Vultures and The Dead Weather. Long-time rockers like The Flaming Lips, Weezer and Pearl Jam all released solid albums. There were also quite a few newcomers to the scene that helped amp up the last few months of 2009.

Here are my top 30 tunes of the year. You can listen them below. Now that is music to my ears.

30). Bulletproof by La Roux Synthesizers and 80’s styled hair-dos are making a comeback.


29). Sagittarrius Silver Announcement by The Flaming Lips Looking forward to this band’s next live history performance.


28). Man Named Truth by Monsters of Folk This unlikely supergroup is a throwback to the days of Bob Dylan, Neil Young and CSNY.


27). Revelry by Kings of Leon This Tennessee band of brothers settles into their sound on Only By the Night.


26). Panic Switch by Silversun Pickups More than just a one-hit wonder.


25). Bounce (ft. N.O.R.E. and Isis) by MSTRKRFTYou can’t help but let your body bounce to the beat.


24). Back Round by Wolfmother The sophomore album from the Aussie rock trio shows a maturation in their style.


23). The Fear by Lily Allen:Vulgar, offensive and dead on.


22). Pursuit of Happiness (ft. MGMT and Ratatat) by Kid Cudi The perfect song for the end of the night.


21). Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare by Matt and Kim The Brooklyn duo belts out a haunting good ol’ fashioned drum beat.


20). Daniel by Bat for Lashes Creepy and charming at the same time.


19). Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear One of the many Brooklyn bands who saw success this year.


18). Caligulove by Them Crooked Vultures Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones – you pretty much can’t go wrong.


17). Polite Dance Song by The Bird and The Bee The best part is that you could waltz with or grind against your partner to this song.


16). Amongst the Waves by Pearl Jam Eddie Vedder and co. prove that they can still hang with the kids.


15). I Will Come Back by Holy Ghost! This Brooklyn man does it all himself.


14). So Far From Your Weapon by The Dead Weather Expect more soon from Jack White’s latest supergroup.


13). Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap Melodic, sweet and tame.


12). Animal by Miike Snow That’s no typo.


11).Deadbeat Summer by Neon Indian The largely-overlooked Austinites are one of the latest bands to emerge from this thriving music scene.


10). Put Me Back Together by Weezer The California rockers empower nerds everywhere with feel-good ballads and quirky jams.


9). 4 Chords of the Apocalypse by Julian Casablancas Going solo allowed Casablancas to show that’s he’s more diverse than his ensemble with The Strokes.


8). I Know What I Am by Band of Skulls Another British band with style and a solid sound.


7). Tiny Little Robots by Cage the Elephant This Bowling, Kentucky band got signed in 2007 after being showcased in  the South-by-Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, Texas.


6). Rome by Phoenix Rock riffs meets pop vocals meets electronic beats meets genius.


5). Coochie (ft. Ludacris and Ol’ Dirty Bastard) by Blakroc The Black Keys invited some of Hip-Hop’s finest fire spitters to partake in one of the most diverse and interesting albums of the year.


4). Zero by Yeah Yeah Yeahs Karen O established herself as a force to be reckoned with this year.


3). Help I’m Alive by Metric Now I’m ready to grab my hammer and build a house.


2). Sleepyhead by Passion Pit This Boston band enjoyed a string of success at music festivals throughout the year.


1). Dominos by The Big Pink These Brit rockers have quietly crashed the American music scene.
